![]() AS Colour is very pleased to offer our first line of Organic cotton t-shirts. These male and female styles are based on our popular Wafer and Paper T shapes, which are fitted lightweight styles with a soft, combed cotton feel. Organic cotton is pricier due to the higher cost of growing the crop without chemicals and the production costs of spinning smaller amounts of fabric, so why choose Organic t-shirts over conventional cotton ones? Cotton is an excellent fibre for clothing but the traditional methods of growing cotton have some serious environmental and health issues: • Conventionally grown cotton accounts for more than 25% of worldwide insecticide use and 10% of the pesticides. Pesticides used in cotton production are among the most hazardous available. • Millions of children in the US receive up to 35% of their estimated lifetime dose of some carcinogenic pesticides by age five through food, contaminated drinking water, household use, and pesticide drift. • It can take up to one pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides to conventionally grow the three pounds of cotton needed to make a T-shirt and a pair of jeans. |
• Pesticides used on cotton cause acute poisonings and chronic illness to farm workers worldwide. Acute respiratory symptoms and other health effects in communities surrounding cotton farms are linked to high use of defoliation chemicals. Besides the environmental benefits that chemical-free Organic cotton offers, the quality of clothing produced from Organic cotton is also substantially higher. Organic cotton plants produce longer-stable cotton fibres, leading to stronger yarn and more durable fabrics. Pesticide-free long-stable cotton also feels softer and more breathable against the skin. Our Organic t-shirts carry a US Department of Agriculture certification, the leading stamp of approval for all crops in the United States. To carry the USDA Organic stamp a certified agent of the USDA program must have inspected the product, regardless of where it was grown or produced. This certification is an internationally recognized standard used throughout the world.
At AS Colour we believe that sustainability and ethical issues are an important part of our business and Organic cotton is a positive step towards lessening our impact on the planet.
